This week’s local spotlight
This week in Calgary sports
Calgary’s university soccer teams have reached the part of the season where there is no next week without a result. The Dinos and Mount Royal Cougars step into Canada West playoff action this weekend. The University of Calgary men open Friday at 4 p.m. against the Thompson Rivers WolfPack at McMahon Stadium. The winner returns Sunday for a conference semifinal, also at McMahon. UCalgary’s women follow at 7 p.m. Friday against the Victoria Vikes. It opens the Canada West championship tournament, with the Dinos hoping home field extends their playoff run through the weekend. Mount Royal’s men begin their post-season away from home, facing Victoria in a single-elimination match Friday in Vancouver. The Cougars women get their opportunity Saturday at 1 p.m., hosting the Trinity Western Spartans at MRU Stadium. That gives Calgary four university soccer teams with championship hopes and very little margin for error. One poor half, one missed assignment or one moment of brilliance can change an entire season. The soccer stakes headline a packed weekend around the city. The Flames host Seattle on Friday, the Wranglers welcome Laval for a Halloween matinee Saturday and the Hitmen face Kamloops on Sunday. The Dinos and Cougars also have basketball and hockey doubleheaders, while SAIT hosts the ACAC men’s and women’s soccer championships at the Calgary Villains FC Dome. But the clearest pressure belongs on the soccer pitch. Regular-season records have been filed away. By Sunday night, Calgary could have several teams moving deeper into November—or several seasons ending suddenly.
