On Deck

There’s horseplay on the Calgary sports calendar this week.

The Masters is underway at Spruce Meadows, bringing world-class show jumping and an enormous purse to the city’s south end through Sunday.

Thursday’s International Ring schedule opened with the ATCO Cup at 11 a.m. and continues with the CANA Cup at 2:15 p.m.

The weekend gets moving Friday. The Paramount Resources Cup begins at 1 p.m. and the Tourmaline Oil Cup follows at 4:15 p.m. The evening belongs to the ATCO Electric Six Bar at 7:30 p.m., when horse-and-rider combinations keep raising the fences until only the highest flyers remain.

National pride takes over Saturday with the BMO Nations’ Cup at 11 a.m. Nine countries are expected to chase one of team show jumping’s most coveted trophies.

Sunday provides the grand finale. The $5-million CPKC International, presented by Rolex, begins at 1 p.m. Germany’s Richard Vogel arrives with a chance to complete the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping, a feat only one rider has previously accomplished.

There is plenty happening away from the International Ring, too, including the Blacksmith World Championships and family entertainment.

The horses may be the headliners, but Calgary’s soccer and football clubs also have major dates. Wild FC hosts Halifax on Saturday, while the Stampeders visit Edmonton. Cavalry FC continues its CPL title chase Sunday at Pacific.

But this week’s spotlight belongs south of the city. At Spruce Meadows, the stakes — and the fences — are rising.

All times are Mountain. Schedules can change; confirm with the team or event organizer before attending.
