Cavalry FC punched its playoff ticket Sunday with the sort of performance that has carried the Calgary club to the top of the Canadian Premier League.
It was patient, disciplined and decided by Daan Klomp. The veteran defender headed home Tobias Warschewski’s delivery in the 81st minute, lifting Cavalry to a 1-0 victory over Pacific FC at Starlight Stadium in Langford, B.C.
The result secured Cavalry’s seventh consecutive playoff appearance, extended its league winning streak to five matches and pushed its overall unbeaten run to eight.
For a club that has built its identity around contention, qualifying will not inspire a parade locally. Cavalry has reached the post-season so often that October soccer is an expectation, not a surprise.
Yet clinching with five games left says plenty about the consistency of Tommy Wheeldon Jr.’s group, especially after an uneven opening stretch forced it to chase the leaders.
More importantly, Calgary remained four points ahead of Forge FC in the CPL Shield race with five regular-season games remaining.
The league’s top two teams meet Saturday at ATCO Field in a match that could have a major say in who finishes first.
Cavalry did not produce its sharpest attacking performance Sunday, but championship contenders find ways to collect points when space is limited and chances are scarce.
Eryk Kobza headed narrowly wide in the 11th minute before Pacific defender Diego Konincks missed from a similar position six minutes later. Pacific created the better opening of the first half when Marco Bustos delivered a free kick toward the back post, but Konincks again steered his header wide.
Calgary increased its pressure after halftime. Warschewski struck the post with a low drive in the 49th minute, beating goalkeeper Sean Melvin but not the frame. Substitute Owen Antoniuk later directed a promising left-footed attempt straight at Melvin.
The breakthrough finally arrived from one of Cavalry’s greatest strengths: a set piece. Warschewski bent his service into the penalty area, and Klomp attacked it with authority, powering his header into the net for the game’s only goal. The assist was Warschewski’s league-leading ninth of the season. It also tied the CPL single-season record shared by Sean Rea in 2022 and David Rodríguez in 2025.
Klomp’s afternoon extended far beyond his goal. Named the CPL’s player of the match, he completed 63 of 74 passes, won seven of 11 duels and added two tackles, two interceptions, two clearances and 11 recoveries.
Pacific nearly spoiled the celebration in the 89th minute. Former Cavalry midfielder Max Piepgrass drove a dangerous attempt from distance, but Nathan Ingham produced an acrobatic save to preserve the clean sheet and all three points. That stop underlined why Cavalry leads the league at both ends of the field.
Through 19 matches, the club has 13 victories, a CPL-best 41 goals and only 12 conceded.
A draw would have been enough to clinch a playoff berth. The victory mattered more because Cavalry remains firmly in control of the Shield race.
Next comes Forge, the nearest challenger and the opponent most capable of changing that picture quickly. Saturday’s kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at ATCO Field.
The playoff ticket is booked. Cavalry’s larger work is not finished. Five games remain, first place is still being contested and another trophy is now within view.
