On Deck

Calgary’s sports calendar turns provincial this week, with three Calgary-Edmonton matchups highlighting a crowded weekend.
The Battle of Alberta begins Friday night with two games in Calgary. The Hitmen host the Edmonton Oil Kings at 7 p.m. at the Scotiabank Saddledome, while the University of Calgary Dinos face the Alberta Golden Bears at the same time at McMahon Stadium.
The football matchup carries particular importance as the Canada West season moves deeper into its second half. With provincial pride and valuable conference positioning at stake, the Dinos will try to make home field count against their northern rivals.
The professional hockey version follows Saturday. The Flames travel to Rogers Place for a 7 p.m. preseason game against the Oilers. The result will not count in the standings, but Calgary-Edmonton games rarely feel completely meaningless, especially for young players competing for roster spots.
There is plenty beyond the provincial rivalry. Cavalry FC hosts FC Supra du Québec at ATCO Field on Friday at 7 p.m., while the Stampeders visit Ottawa on Saturday at 1 p.m. for the second half of their home-and-home series.
Sunday belongs to Calgary’s soccer clubs. Calgary Wild FC welcomes Vancouver Rise FC to McMahon Stadium at 2 p.m. for the Wild’s final home match of the regular season. The MRU Cougars and Calgary Dinos also continue their respective Canada West soccer schedules during the weekend.
From campus football to junior and NHL hockey, Alberta bragging rights will be available on multiple fronts.

Times are Mountain unless otherwise noted. Results are included for games already completed.
