The Flames will open a new season by beginning the long goodbye to their old home this week.
Seattle visits the Scotiabank Saddledome on Thursday for Calgary’s regular-season opener, launching the final Flames campaign at the building they have called home since 1983. One game cannot define a season, but this one carries more emotion than an average October faceoff.
It also begins a demanding opening stretch. After facing the Kraken at 7 p.m., the Flames travel west for games against the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday and Seattle on Sunday. Three games in four nights should provide a test for a roster shaped by training-camp competition and decisions.
The Dome will stay busy. The Calgary Wranglers open their AHL season against the Abbotsford Canucks on Friday, then complete the two-game set Saturday. The Calgary Hitmen host the Regina Pats on Sunday afternoon after visiting Lethbridge the previous night.
Beyond the Saddledome, the Stampeders carry their playoff chase into Regina for a crucial Friday meeting with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Cavalry FC plays twice away, visiting Atlético Ottawa on Wednesday and Inter Toronto on Saturday, while Calgary Wild FC travels to Halifax.
The university slate includes Dinos football against Regina at McMahon Stadium, along with soccer, hockey, rugby and field-hockey action involving Calgary, Mount Royal and SAIT.
The week, however, belongs to the Flames and the beginning of a farewell winter. The Saddledome has hosted championships, heartbreak and generations of Calgary hockey memories.
Starting Thursday, it gets one final season to create more.
All times Mountain.
